The organisation of the School of Law

The management of the School of Law

Director of the School of Law undertakes the day-to-day management of the School, including planning and the allocation of tasks. In accordance with Section 17(2) of the Law on universities, the Director of the School of Law can require staff to undertake specific tasks.

When academic members of staff are not occupied with such tasks, they carry out research within the framework of the University’s research strategy.

In the School of Law a Management Forum has been appointed, consisting of the Director of the School of Law, the Deputy-Director, the heads of the four academic departments and the School of Law Secretary. All decisions that are of wider significance are, as far as possible, discussed in this forum before being put into effect. The discussions take the form of consultations since the final decision rests with the Director of the School. As hitherto, the Director of the School will aim to achieve the widest possible consensus on the decisions.

The is also a School Council at the School of Law, which holds an annual meeting to discuss the School’s status and development plans, including the budgets for the coming year.

The academic departments

A Head of Department is appointed for each department. The Director of the School of Law has delegated the authority to the Heads of Department to carry out the following tasks:

  • The day-to-day management of the department.
  • The allocation of teaching between the academic staff of the department.
  • Supervision of the teaching evaluations in accordance with the practice of the School of Law. Drafting contributions to the annual reports of the School of Law and the University.
  • Monitoring the research work of the academic staff in accordance with the guidelines of the Principle of the University of 22 January 2004 and the practice of the School of Law.
  • Presentation and introduction on new staff to the department. Allocation of offices in the department.
  • Offers of further education for the administrative personnel. Informing the department about important decisions.
  • Holding at least two departmental meetings per year, to which all staff in the department are invited.
  • Appointing an assessment committee for jobs as student advisors, teaching assistants and external lecturers.
  • Allocation of finances within the budget of the department, including annual grants, assistance, book acquisition and travel.
  • Decisions on the payment for courses.
  • The monitoring of the level of work application by staff is registered on a standard form in accordance with the practice of the School of Law.
  • Monitoring whether the academic staff attend the department to a reasonable extent and undertake their tasks in the department, including contact with students.
  • Monitoring whether the academic staff fulfil the requirements for having offices at home financed by the School of Law.
